Candando opens third hypermarket in Angola

Dec 11, 2017

Candando Angola
Hypermarket chain Candando, owned by Isabel dos Santos, opened its third outlet in Angola, in the town of Viana.

Candando opened a new hypermarket in the Luanda province town of Viana. This is the retailer’s third outlet in Angola. The new store boasts 8,500 m² of retail space and a broad number of sections, including ready-made and an in-store restaurant. The outlet is the largest store and anchor tenant of the new Power Centre Viana shopping mall, just outside Luanda.

The opening of Candando’s third store gets the retailer one step further in its $400 million expansion plan. This was announced when the first hypermarket opened in 2016 and anticipated the opening of ten outlets within five years.  Candando is owned by Isabel dos Santos’ Contidis group. The creation of Contidis followed the 2015 falling through of a joint venture between Dos Santos and Portuguese retail group Sonae to launch a chain of Continente hypermarkets in Angola in 2015. Dos Santos went on to create Contidis and open the first Candando outlet last year.
