Baker's Inn
Zimbabwe bakery Baker’s Inn has announced plans to invest US$20m in expanding its plants in Bulawayo and Harare over the next 18 months.

Baker’s Inn opened as a single store in Harare in 1989, producing 5,000 loaves per day. The bakery was upgraded to a plant bakery in 1996, increasing production to 18,000 loaves per day. More plants in Harare were opened in 1997. The first state-of-the-art plant in Bulawayo was established in 2010. Last year, Baker’s Inn opened a new US$5m plant in Bulawayo, increasing production by 85%.

At least US$11m of the total investment is intended to double production capacity at the Bulawayo plant by installing an additional plant which the company says is “significantly more technologically advanced than the current machines”. This will increase production to 400,000 loaves per day in order to meet the high demand for bread in Zimbabwe which previously had to be supplied from the Harare factory. With the increase in production, Baker’s Inn will also purchase more distribution trucks to deliver to its six depots in the southern region. The expansion of operations will create numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities in the Bulawayo area.

The company also intends to invest the same amount in its Harare factory, with plans for an additional plant which will significantly increase production capacity. Baker’s Inn sales and marketing executive Caleb Musonza says “We are very positive about the future of the bread market in the country, hence our investing.”
