Carrefour Kenya has announced sales of $286.7m (32.9b KES) in 2021, an increase of 25.8% on $228.3m (26.2b KES) sales in 2020.

Carrefour is operated by Emirati holding company Majjid al Futtaim in Kenya. It opened its first store in the country in 2016 and now has fourteen branches. It has said that it intends to continue expanding its retail network and focus on online shopping. Following the COVID-10 pandemic restrictions, use of online shopping has increased sharply in the last two years. Carrefour signed a partnership deal with Jumia in April 2020 and delivery app Glovo in October 2020 and claims it can deliver “NOW” orders within sixty minutes.

Carrefour is the second-largest retailer in Kenya by both floorspace and market share and the only major foreign-owned retailer. Massmart, the South African retailer that owns three Game stores in Nairobi and Kisumu, announced in August that it will be exiting both West and East Africa and is looking to sell the Kenyan stores. Botswanan chain Choppies announced its exit from Kenya in 2019 followed by South African retailer Shoprite in 2020. Carrefour has admitted Kenya has “challenging macro-economic conditions” but it intends to continue its expansion in the country.
