KFC has opened its first outlet in Madagascar. The new outlet is in the Tana Water Front shopping mall in Antananarivo’s Ambodivona neighbourhood – where South African supermarket chain Shoprite also has a store. KFC’s partner in Madagascar is Groupe Eclosia, a Mauritian conglomerate operating across food, hospitality, logistics and education.

KFC’s Madagascar outlet has reportedly had five years of planning and feasibility studies. Its partner is Pick n Eat Ltd, a subsidiary of Mauritian conglomerate Groupe Eclosia, which also owns Mauritius’ largest chicken agribusiness, Avipro. Pick n Eat Ltd, which was founded in 1983, also runs the KFC franchise in Mauritius, where there are 21 outlets. The company has already announced the launch date for Madagascar’s second KFC store. It will open in April 2020 at the Akoor Digue shopping mall, also in Antananarivo.

The Madagascar launch means that KFC is now present in 22 countries in Africa, with new outlets also planned in Rwanda and Uganda (although the Rwandan launch appears somewhat delayed), with East African partner Kuku Foods.

It’s a step change for Madagascar, which has several domestic fast food chains but no international chains until now. Pizza is the most popular format by far, but Trendtype also tracks two small domestic fried chicken chains in the country.
