Nigerian challenger supermarket chain Marketsquare opens its 16th store

May 11, 2021

Marketsquare, one of a growing number of challenger supermarket chains in Nigeria has opened its 16th store in the country. The new outlet is in Benin City, along Auchi Road. It is the company’s second outlet in the city.

Marketsquare explicitly positions itself as a Nigerian brand catering for Nigerian consumers (the implied comparison is with market leaders Shoprite and Spar, which are both international brands).

Marketsquare is owned by Sundry Markets and its headquartered in Port Harcourt, where most of its stores are located. There are now Marketsquare outlets in Port Harcourt, Yenagoa (90km west of Port Harcourt), Owerri, Benin City, Enugu, Aba and Lagos.

The new store cements Marketsquare’s position as one of the most dynamic and exciting Nigerian supermarket chains. Among indigenous chains, no other supermarket chain has anything approaching national reach. Neither does Marketsquare, but with the exception of Grand Square, it is the only supermarket chain that looks as if it is trying to build a store network covering Nigeria’s major cities.
