Glovo, the online ordering app, has entered Ghana. It is its second market in West Africa (after Côte d’Ivoire) and its fifth market in Africa. Glovo is also in Kenya, Uganda and Morocco. It exited Egypt in January 2020.

For now, Glovo only serves Accra. It has partnered with MaxMart and Melcom, two of the leading supermarket chains in Ghana to offer products from their stores. Delivery costs GHS7.00 ($1.2). It has also partnered with the fast food chains Chicken Inn and Pizza Inn, Galito’s and Burger King (all of whose operators/franchisees it partners with in Kenya) as well as some local restaurants. Launch PR indicated that Glovo would also offer pharmacy items through a local partner but this was not operational at the time of writing.

Glovo app users can log on to order food, groceries and drinks. Alternatively they can send a courier (called a “Glover”) to pick up and deliver items. Glovo also touts a feature called the “anything” category, which allows consumers to order whatever they want from restaurants, grocery chains, pharmacies and retail stores.

The entry of Glovo throws down the gauntlet to Jumia in Ghana, which also offers a wide range of supermarket items for sale through its platform and is the market leader. It also operates its Jumia Food takeaway delivery service in Accra, Tema and Kumasi. Jumia and Glovo go head to head in Morocco, Kenya, Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire. Jumia has a wide-ranging partnership with Carrefour in Africa, which includes Kenya, Uganda, Morocco and will likely extend to Côte d’Ivoire in the near future.
