Shoprite has revealed that the sale of personal care products have soared at its Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets during the COVID-19 lockdown. The retailer says this is due to hair and beauty salons being closed and consumers having more time to focus on their appearance.

High demand items include ethnic haircare products such as hair extensions, relaxers, colourants, conditioners and other treatments. Hair colour products have also gained significant popularity.

Other areas witnessing strong sales growth include nail polish, face creams, cleansers and skin refreshers dominate the skincare category. Shaving products, specifically men’s disposables, have also had strong sales growth.

Another factor Shoprite’s insight team have identified is what it calls the “lipstick effect” – consumers spending more on small luxuries to treat themselves while in lockdown.
