Spar Zimbabwe has launched an online retail store – the first major supermarket chain in the country to offer the service. The new store, SPAR Online, offers 600 core products from across the grocery range and offers delivery within 24 hours in the Harare area.

The site has recorded 11,000 unique visits and 560 customer registrations in its first few weeks of operation. Spar Zimbabwe is positioning the new service not only to consumers within Zimbabwe but also to their families outside the country. Outside of Zimbabwe, most visitors come from the USA, UK, and South Africa.

The service is only available to customers in the Harare area, who can either opt for delivery within 24 hours or click and collect from selected Spar outlets. Spar Zimbabwe is looking to roll out the service to other cities – most obviously Bulawayo.

Technically, Spar isn’t the first major supermarket chain in Zimbabwe to offer online retail. Startup platform Kamelee partnered with Choppies in 2017 to offer a service allowing Zimbabwean diaspora to buy goods that would be collected from Choppies stores in Zimbabwe. However, as far as we can tell although the site is live the service never actually worked.
