CFAO, Carrefour’s partner in West Africa, has launched its third Supeco cash and carry in Senegal to take on market leader Auchan. All three outlets, the first of which opened in April 2019, are situated in Dakar. The new store is in the Golf district of the capital.
In January CFAO launched its first Carrefour supermarket in Senegal. it revealed that it plans to launch 8-10 Supeco stores across Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon and Senegal in 2019. After the April 2019 launch of its first outlet, it opened its second store in June 2019 in the Grand Yoff district. This third store is in the Golf district of Dakar. So far CFAO has only opened stores in Senegal – the Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon are now scheduled to open in 2020. This new store marks CFAO’s ninth supermarket in Africa.
CFAO is using Carrefour’s Supeco discounter format to take on Senegal’s market leader, Auchan. Auchan entered Senegal – its most important market in Africa, in 2016. It subsequently acquired the rival Citydia network in 2017. Revenue growth is high and Auchan now has 30 stores, including some outside Dakar (Thies and Mbour for example).
In Senegal, Supeco stores are typically between 750m² and 1000m² and situated in high traffic, densely populated areas. They are open seven days a week. Stores carry 2,500 SKUs, including some Carrefour private label. CFAO is marketing the use of pallets, limited air conditioning and decor as a virtue, telling consumers it is passing on cost savings to them.
