Talamo Foods expands to yoghurt market in Namibia

Namibian family-owned Talamo Foods has started producing yoghurts, the company announced earlier this month.

Although not a recent player in the food and beverage market, Talamo Foods is relatively new to the dairy industry and thus the move represents a considerable expansion in the company’s operation. Only last September the company embarked on its first dairy-related venture, launching its cultured milk, Omaotekwa.

Since then, Talamo has also started producing clarified butter. According to the company both products, which have been selling at selected Spar supermarkets, are being very well received by consumers. Founder Erikson Malwa has said that the “cultured milk (with a recommended retail price of N$35) sells out at all retailers where it is available”.

The new line of products consists of four flavoured drinking yoghurts, including strawberry, banana, plain and sweet. This expansion comes at a time when the Namibian dairy industry goes through a rough trading environment. The prices of milk and dairy in general are going to increase soon as volumes of dairy products produced in Namibian farms stand four percent lower than at the same time last year. This, however, is not preventing Talamo Foods investing in growth. The company says that, although currently a very small operation, “orders are exceeding our current output. We are in the process of upscaling and we intend penetrating the northern market which I think will dramatically escalate our sales.” The company’s main objectives now are expanding outside Windhoek and also into other Southern African markets.

Talamo Foods is a family-owned food and beverage company launched in 2011 by husband and wife Erikson and Albertina Malwa. Until recently, Talamo focused on producing sauces and condiments. Its Erikson Sauces brand includes Talamo’s Tomato Sauce, Barbecue Sauce, Chilli Sauce and Kapana Sauce – a spicy barbecue-style sauce mainly used for stir-fry and roasts.
